How to clean the C drive?
Watch the video
The system drive C should not be overloaded with unnecessary information that could successfully be stored on the same drive D, and therefore it is important to periodically clean it or initially avoid dropping unnecessary information there in order not to slow down the performance of the PC system. Read more about this below.
Clean the C: What can I do?
Folders related to drive C
The space of this disk by default includes the contents of the desktop, as well as the folders “My Documents”, “My Music”, “My Video”, “My Pictures”, “Recycle Bin”. And in Windows 7 also “Downloads”, “Libraries”. Any information placed here will clog the system disk, and therefore, you need to ensure that these folders do not contain heavy files.
This is especially true of the download folder, the recycle bin and the desktop - it is here that we often dump a huge amount of information, and then we wonder why the desired game gives an error when installing, referring to the lack of space on the system drive (that is, on that C drive).
Accordingly, carefully review the contents of the listed objects and delete / transfer to disk D everything superfluous.
Windows temporary folder
To save intermediate or unfinished work results, various processes occurring in the PC system during the launch of various programs, applications, tasks, use a temporary folder. If you are going to clean the C drive, do not forget about it.
You can find it as follows:
- If you have Windows XP, then go to the "Start" menu and select "Run."
- If it is Windows Vista or Windows 7, then go to the "Start" menu. Next, select "All Programs" and then "Standard" and "Run."
Both in the first and in the second case a window with black fill and white letters will open before you. Type in it: "% temp%" and press Enter. After that, you will see that temporary folder itself.
After that, you will need to close all open programs and applications, because in the course of their work they can access this folder. Now nothing prevents you from cleaning the contents of the storage. As a rule, it does not contain anything particularly important to the user.
By saving data about the page after the first transition to it, the browser further simplifies this page for itself: it takes all the basic information about the site from the cache folder. We can view the data on visiting sites in the History section of your browser.
Accordingly, during intensive work with numerous Internet sites, this folder is clogged up with completely unnecessary information by the user, which will soon affect the amount of disk space C.
To clear the cache, simply go to the History menu by pressing the Ctrl + Shift + Delete key combination (suitable for Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer users). In the window that opens, select the desired period, the data for which you are going to destroy, for example, for the last day or week. But if you have not cleaned this folder for a long time, then it is better to select "For the entire period".
If you have Opera installed, you can clear the cache by going to the browser menu, and then to “Settings”. Select "Delete personal data." And Safari users will need to go to the browser menu, and then select "Reset Safari".
Sometimes, finding files that can be deleted is not so easy, especially if it concerns unused applications / programs / files or “remnants” of programs that were retained on the PC after the utility was removed.
Special programs that can very quickly carry out a “general cleaning” of the system space will help in this.your computer. First of all, this is a very common program due to its functionality and simplicity.
All you need is to download it from the official site for free and install it. After that, go to the program menu. In the center window, you will see two large sections: “Windows” and “Applications”. To the right will be the task menu: “Cleaning”, “Problems”, “Service”, “Settings”. Putting checkmarks in front of the items you need in the sections and choosing the function of cleaning or eliminating the problem you have, you will take care of your PC system. If you wish, you can configure automatic cleaning of specified folders, for example, with a cache, with cookies, with temporary files or with files that you have not used for a long time.
In addition, you can choose the following CCleaner paid analogues:
- Registry mechanic
- System Cleaner.
- SBMAV Disk Cleaner
You can also scan your computer for temporary files (both existing and already deleted programs) through the FreeSpacer program.
