How to Conduct a Séance
A séance is a meeting of three or more people who gather to receive messages from ghosts, spirits of the dead, or to listen to a medium relay messages from spirits.
Gather the participants.Three is the minimum number of people who should participate in a séance.
Choose a medium. This will be the person who will lead the séance and should be someone who has experience or psychic abilities.
Decide on who you will be summoning. Are you seeking connection with an ancestor, or just wanting to see who's out there?
Set the table.Place three candles, or a number divisible by three, in the center, and place an offering of food in the center, as well.
Create an atmosphere conducive to connecting to the spirit world.Light the candles, dim the lights, light some incense.
Gather everyone around the table and hold hands to create a circle.
Summon the spirit(s) by chanting in unison:"Spirits of the past, move among us. Be guided by the light of this world and visit upon us." If you are wishing to contact a relative or friend, you may chant something like this: "Beloved (name), we bring you gifts from life into death. Be guided by the light of this world and visit upon us."
Wait for a response.Repeat the chant if necessary until you get a response.
Ask your questions once the spirit responds. It's best to start by asking simple yes or no questions. Give the spirit suggestions for communication.
Ask any question you wish when the spirit speaks through the medium.
Stay calm. While it can be startling to actually make a connection, it is important to maintain control of the situation.
End the séance by having one person remove the offerings and turning on the lights and opening a door or a window if the situation gets out of control.Join hands until the spirit leaves, then either replace the offerings, dim the lights and prepare for a fight, or blow out the candles and end the session for the night.
End the séance by thanking the spirit for visiting, breaking the circle of hands, extinguishing the candles, and turning on the lights.Do this only when everyone is satisfied.
QuestionWill the steps be the same for summoning a demon?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerSimilar, however it will require some alterations. You will need to draw a pentagram on the table. Thanks!
QuestionHow can I conduct a seance if I am a young girl?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerFollow the steps given. You do not have to be a certain age to conduct a séance. Thanks!
QuestionCan a spirit hurt you after the seance?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerIt can if it decides to latch onto you or someone else. It can drain you of energy/emotion.Thanks!
QuestionThe spirits said terrible things to me and my family, so I ended the seance. Do they have the power to do what they said they would do to me without the seance?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerThe only people with the power are the family members who uttered those terrible things. Some ill feeling resides among your family members and now is a great time to sit down and have a real time family discussion about who is resenting whom and why. No spirits told you those things, you told each other under the veil of a parlor game and your family needs to sort its issues out calmly and like responsible living beings. Thanks!
QuestionIs a pentagram required for it to work?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerNo, as you aren't summoning something demonic. Pentagrams are used in rituals with darker entities. You should try to keep this as friendly and as light as possible. Thanks!
QuestionCan I do a seance without an experienced person?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerYes, you can, although it is not advisable. In case things become too emotional or uncontrolled, it's always best to have an experienced person there. Thanks!
QuestionHow can I do this without a psychic?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerTable tilting is easy to accomplish. Remain relaxed and jovial, but retain some reverence, sincerity and politeness. Don't argue, swear or jump to irrational conclusions. Thanks!
QuestionCan I do it without candles?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerNo, the spirit world is lit by candle light, and it needs to look like the spirit world in order for the person to listen. Thanks!
QuestionCan I use a metal table to do a seance?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerYou can use a metal table to hold a seance, but you need to give the spirit some type of something to get energy from. A metal table will be really heavy and make it hard for the spirit to move. Thanks!
QuestionCan I do this alone, without others?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerNo, you must have three or more people. It will not work alone. You shouldn't try to summon anything by yourself alone, either. Thanks!

- Don't allow unstable individuals to participate in a séance. People with certain mental health issues and young children should not participate as they are too vulnerable.
- Remember to have fun!
- Always stop a séance if someone asks due to fear or other concerns. Never force anyone to continue if they do not want to.
- When conducting a séance, don't ask for a connect more than one time every three days.
- Never summon a demon or evil entity unless you know what you are doing and have a very good reason for doing so.
- Understand that there are charlatans out there who will take your money at a moment's notice under the guise of spiritualism. The emphasis of a séance should be on spirit, not showmanship.
- Do some research first; see if the séance is against your religion. In the Catholic religion, for instance, all forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future.
