    What is a dynasty?

The word "dynasty" comes from the Greek δῠναστεία, which means "power", "domination". On this basis, it is possible to determine what a dynasty is.

Dynasty is a term used to designate several rulers, descended from the same family and succeeding each other on the throne by right of inheritance. The ruling dynasties are characteristic of states with a monarchical form of government.

If we are talking about the ruling family or family, then the dynasty is all members of the family of this kind, regardless of whether they inherit the throne or not.

In a figurative sense, a dynasty refers to members of one genus who continue the family business, following in the footsteps of their parents. For example, it may be a dynasty of doctors, lawyers or winemakers.

For example, there are several famous ruling dynasties: Rurikovich, Romanovs, Valois, Bourbons, Tudors, Windsors, Yorks, Stuarts, Ottomans, Chingisids, Habsburgs and many others.
