What is porcelain?
In this article we will look at what porcelain is. This word comes from Turkish and Persian. In the most general form, porcelain is a kind of ceramics that does not allow water and gas to pass through.
Various items are made from porcelain. If the walls of the product are thin, then they can be enlightened. If you lightly tap on porcelain dishes with a wooden stick, then you will hear a characteristic pleasant high sound. The tone of the sound can vary depending on the wall thickness, as well as the shape of the product.
The composition of porcelain includes: kaolin, quartz, feldspar and plastic clay. But this set of components may vary, and, consequently, the final material will also change. One way or another, the coarse mixture of initial elements must undergo high-temperature calcination.
The above mixture must be poured into a plaster, hollow inside the form. After some time, the water from the solution begins to accumulate in the plaster. At the same time, the outer layer of the product hardens. Thus, the longer the workpiece is, the thicker its walls will be.
Types of porcelain
Porcelain is usually divided into hard and soft. Appearance depends on the initial composition of the mixture. The chemical composition also does not affect the temperature at which the product will be fired. Soft porcelain is more often used in the process of making art products, and hard - in the production of everyday things (for example, tableware).
Porcelain objects are decorated with two different techniques: underglaze and overglaze painting. The technique depends on the sequence of the overlay layers.
Many countries around the world are known for their porcelain factories.
